Palpitations

Thomas Dulfer

About the album

Throughout my life, I have found it difficult to make choices. A good example of this is my time as a student when I chose to pursue a biomedical career and a career in music as a bassoonist simultaneously. Within my biomedical field, I eventually chose cardiovascular research because the heart is connected to everything in the body and can be studied on so many different levels.

Just as the heart is the connection within our own body, music is, to me, the way to connect with people. That is why I decided to create a piece where these two worlds come together by playing the bassoon to my own heartbeat. This event, together with my drive to show the world what the bassoon is capable of, marks the beginning of years of development eventually resulting in Palpitations.

Palpitations is about what literally and figuratively makes my heart beat faster. It consists of works that are close to my heart. It is inspired by the most touching experiences I have encountered in both my musical journey and personal life over the past years. The combination of pieces, together with the help of technical equipment like effect pedals and heartrate-sensors, makes Palpitations a very personal and original program with the bassoon in the spotlight.
